Nationwide Recovery Service, based in Cleveland, Tennessee, is a debt collection agency providing customer support, collections, and recovery management services across various industries in the United States. Licensed to operate in all 50 states, it offers both first-party and third-party collection services to handle delinquent accounts at different stages.
The company recently experienced a data breach that exposed sensitive personal information of current and former patients, customers, and employees of multiple clients.
Among the victims are Radiology Chartered in Wisconsin; approximately 210,000 patients of Harbin Clinic in Georgia; nearly 90,000 patients of Texas-based Vitruvian Health (also known as Hamilton Health Care) and its affiliates; as well as several other healthcare and non-healthcare organizations. The compromised data may include names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, financial details, and medical records. Additional affected entities include Smile Solutions (Tennessee), Providence Swedish (Washington), and Erlanger (North Carolina). Several other NRS clients across various sectors have also issued breach notifications or reports. Impacted individuals have since been notified by mail.
The total number of individuals affected and the full list of impacted entities have not yet been publicly disclosed.
The recent Nationwide Recovery Service data breach is a serious matter that could inflict far-reaching consequences for those affected. The exposure of personally identifiable information, especially names and Social Security numbers, poses a significant risk of identity theft, such as criminals opening financial accounts, taking out loans, filing fraudulent tax returns, and obtaining government services in the victim’s name. Personally identifiable information can also be exposed on the Dark Web, which poses a serious threat toward the privacy and safety of many individuals. According to a recent FTC survey, the total cost of identity theft is nearly $50 billion per year, with victims losing an average of nearly $5,000 from the misuse of their personal and financial information. The exposure of protected medical information can pose an even greater danger of identity theft—such as obtaining medical services in the victim’s name, which will be charged to the victim.
Current and former patients, employees, and customers of Nationwide Recovery Service’s clients may be at increased risk of fraud and identity theft and are advised to closely monitor their financial accounts. You could be at risk of incurring additional out-of-pocket costs for purchasing credit monitoring services, credit freezes, credit reports, or other protective measures to deter and detect identity theft.
