Beware of Hidden Insurance Fees: Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty Car Rental Practices in Mexico

Cafferty Clobes Meriwether & Sprengel LLP is currently investigating a class action involving Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty car rental services and their subsidiaries, specifically regarding unexpected insurance charges imposed on travelers visiting popular destinations like Cabo San Lucas and Cancun, Mexico.

Recent reports from consumers indicate that Hertz, Dollar and Thrifty customers are informed only once they have arrive at the rental facility that they are required to purchase insurance only available in Mexico in order to rent a vehicle for use while in the country. These charges are never disclosed at the point of sale, whether renting directly from the rental companies website or one operated by third parties like Expedia, and often exceed the cost of the rental vehicle itself.

While booking through Hertz’s website or third-party platforms such as Expedia, Travelocity, or Kayak, travelers often assume their rental agreement includes comprehensive coverage. However, upon vehicle pickup, they are met with mandatory charges for local liability insurance, significantly increasing the total cost. This practice has left many customers feeling blindsided and frustrated.

The issue appears tied to Mexico’s legal requirements for liability insurance, which Hertz claims are excluded from prepaid reservations. Travelers have reported inconsistent explanations and a lack of transparency during the booking process, leaving them unprepared for the additional expenses.
